Sally’s sugar cookies are for all the Nightmare Before Christmas fans out there, colorful and stitched up inspired by Sally!
This post and recipe was created for #HalloweenTreatsWeek! I was sent samples by some of the sponsor companies but as always opinions are 100% mine. This recipe is for adults 21 and older and does contain alcohol.
The 90 degree weather finally broke just in time to prepare for Halloween! I dug out my Halloween decorations this weekend and already want to go out and buy more. Not that we own a house I feel more compelled to because those decorations will for sure have a designated spot for the foreseeable future. Especially since while putting up lights on the front porch we spied our neighbors doing the same and waged neighborly war. Gah, I just love our neighborhood!
With Halloween obviously comes all kinds of treats. I am kicking things off with cookies inspired by our favorite Halloween movie (but some may argue it is a Christmas movie), Nightmare Before Christmas. We even have the soundtrack of artists doing covers of the original songs from the movie. Since one of my favorite artists, Fiona Apple, redid Sally’s Song I was inspired to make these cookies. They are just my chewy sugar cookies dyed to look like Sally’s dress complete with stitches made of black icing. They are a great paired with a Nightmare Before Christmas wreath veggie tray, too!
In this recipe I used sponsored products such as granulated sugar from Dixie Crystals, vanilla extract and natural food coloring from Adams Extract, black decorating icing from Wilton, and goodie bags to hand them out from Sweets and Treats Shop. Scroll down for the list of other spooky treats kicking off #HalloweenTreatsWeek today and at the end of this post is the giveaway info and entry!

SALLY’S SUGAR COOKIES
Makes approximately 3 dozen
Ingredients:
2 cups all-purpose flour
1-1/2 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted and cooled to almost room temperature
1-1/2 cups Dixie Crystals pure cane sugar
1 egg, room temperature
1 Tbsp milk
1 tsp Adams Extract pure vanilla extract
Adams Extract natural food coloring
Wilton black decorating icing
Directions:
- In a medium bowl, Whisk together flour, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
- In a large bowl, beat together the butter and sugar until creamy, about 3 minutes. Add egg, milk, and vanilla and beat until combined. Gradually add flour mixture, mixing until just combined.
- Divide evenly into fourths. Add pink, purple, blue, and yellow food coloring, mixing just until evenly distributed. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, or overnight.
- Preheat oven to 350°F. Line cookie sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats.
- Roll 1 teaspoon of each color dough into balls. Place on prepared cookie sheets, about 2 inches apart.
- Bake 8 minutes, or until edges of cookies are just starting to brown and centers are set. Let cool on sheets for 5-10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
- Once cooled, draw “stitches” using black icing.
