Mac and cheese with hot dogs is a common meal option for kids. Jazz it up with an octopus hot dog called an octoweeine and serve it over a toasted bagel bite.
When my friend Shiva asked me to help come up with recipes for the Tabletop Board Game Cafe she requested I make a bagel bite involving an octoweeine. Since I had never heard of this before I will explain. An octoweeine is a hot dog that has been sliced lengthwise to have 8 legs, resembling an octopus. When thinking of things to pair with this creation my mind immediately went to mac and cheese, just like mac and cheese with hot dogs but this version sits upon a toasted bagel bite and looks exceptionally fun. Sounds like the perfect appetizer to eat while playing some board games!

OCTOWEEINE-MAC AND CHEESE BAGEL BITES
Makes 2
Ingredients:
1 hot dog, cut in half crosswise
1 mini bagel, sliced and toasted
Heaping 1/2 cup prepared macaroni and cheese
Directions:
- Preheat toaster oven or oven to 400 degrees. Line a small baking sheet with foil and lightly coat with nonstick spray.
- To make the octoweeines, leaving the end 1-inch uncut, cut each hot dog piece in half lengthwise then into quarters and eighths. Fan out the “legs” and place the hot dogs on the prepared baking sheet so that the “legs” splay out around the hot dog sitting upright. Cook for 10-15 minutes or until the cooked through and starting to curl.
- Scoop 1/4 cup of the mac and cheese onto each bagel-half. Top with octoweeine and serve immediately. (You could also draw a face on the ocotoweeine using mustard or ketchup. I tried carving a face with a toothpick but it wasn’t as striking.)
